A series of earthquakes and aftershocks of magnitudes ranging from 4.6 to 6.2 hit the Karonga district in Malawi since the first week of December 2009. The first earthquake occurred at 0119, at a depth of 15.2km.
At first, a one-year-old child died and some people were reported injured due to the tremors. Most of the mud and thatch houses located around the epicentre collapsed, leaving hundreds homeless.
Under the leadership of the ACT forum coordinator, a survey was done by visiting affected homes in 3 major areas. results show that the affected families are in need of food and shelter. Children under five-years-old were in the most danger as they need drugs and food.

The government of Malawi has provided some relief efforts. The red cross in Malawi has also tried to help the affected people in Karonga and Chikwawa.
The earthquake is in orange alert. It can have a high impact as the area affected is highly populated and is in danger of natural disasters. Buildings have been damaged in the uranium-rich northern Karonga district.
Many people fled their homes when the first earthquake struck on
Sunday. Karonga police spokesman Enock Levason said a woman and her child had been sent to mzuzu central hospital after a wall in their crumbling house fell on them. Four people were also being treated. Tremors were still occurring, although a number of houses and school blocks have been destroyed. The police are still assessing the remote parts of the district.
Karonga is a site of uranium mining, by an Australian firm, Paladin Eenrgy.
The earthquakes and aftershocks are occurring when the country experiences heavy rainfall, so sleeping outside cannot be an option.
The civil engineering experts have blamed falling houses on poor workmanship and usage of unreliable building materials.
